Dementia Care in SCARF (DEMCARES) is an initiative by the Schizophrenia Research Foundation which was started in January 2015 to extend clinical services, raise awareness, explore availability of resources, build capacity through training and intervention, and conduct research in dementia care and service provision. The project is funded by the Infosys Foundation.

DEMCARES has three main arms – clinical services, support services and research activities. The land was donated by Mr. A. Damodaran and his family. Significant contributions were also made by prominent entities, including Sundaram Finance Limited, Sundaram Fasteners Limited, Murugappa Educational and Medical Foundation, The RAMCO Cements Ltd, Brakes India Pvt Ltd, and other corporate donors.The Dementia Training and Resource Centre premises has been leased to SCARF at no cost by Dr. Anita Sumanth, a Chennai-based advocate. Dr Anita’s kind gesture honours the memory of her beloved parents Dr. Padma Ramachandran and Mr. V Ramachandran. We deliver post-diagnostic support in the form of caregiver information-sharing sessions and support groups for caregivers on a monthly basis at the centre. We also conduct training programs for health-care assistants and DEMCARES volunteers routinely.
