FAQ
How can we best support individuals with dementia and their caregivers?
Dementia care is highly personalized, depending on the specific type, stage, and individual needs. Early on, family support and future planning are crucial. As the disease progresses, assistance with daily activities becomes increasingly important, and home care can significantly alleviate caregiver burden. In later stages, alternative living arrangements, such as assisted living or nursing homes, may be necessary. However, with the right support, many individuals with dementia can maintain a high quality of life at home throughout their journey.
Can dementia be prevented?
Preventing Alzheimer’s is challenging. There’s no cure, and aging is a major risk factor. While head injuries can be prevented, family history and genetics are largely uncontrollable. However, research suggests that a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise and a diet, may reduce the risk.
How is dementia diagnosed?
Dementia is diagnosed through a comprehensive assessment that evaluates cognitive decline and its impact on daily living. This involves cognitive testing and interviews with the individual and their family. To determine the underlying cause, a thorough medical evaluation is conducted, including physical and neurological examinations, blood tests, and brain imaging techniques such as MRI or PET scans.
