Training for home care nurses

The DEMCARES introduction to dementia training programme has been designed to be accessible and easily understood by formal caregivers of someone with a diagnosis of dementia. Typically a formal caregiver is a nurse assistant or a health care assistant, they could be from a nursing agency or employed at home. We have focused our training upon four foundational topics, to empower these formal caregivers or health care assistants to deliver care with greater empathy and understanding.

The sessions focus upon expanding knowledge and understanding about dementia and the behaviours related to dementia.

The training is divided into four modules:

  • Introduction to Dementia
We discover the biological factors that cause dementia and the varying types of dementia that exist. We also look at how dementia progresses with time and the impact it has on the brain’s functions.
  • Person Centred Care
Throughout the journey of dementia it is vital that the person is not forgotten. As time progresses this can be easy to do and we discuss ways to help encourage a person’s individuality, confidence and sense of well being despite dementia diagnosis.
  • Communication in Dementia
As dementia progresses communication can become more challenging for the person with dementia and their caregiver. Despite the challenges, communication is still vital and we look into strategies to keep communication at the heart of the care relationship.
  • Behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia
Sometimes due to challenging communication and the nature of dementia, behaviour can become challenging for the health care assistant to manage. We look into the reasons for some common behavioural symptoms and explore strategies to reduce challenging behaviours and prevent distressing outcomes.
